Wellbeing in schools (2005-2006)

Challenge

The Waitemata DHB asked Educating NZ to facilitate the Wellbeing in Schools Project - a teacher professional development programme in nutrition and physical activity. The project aimed to introduce policies and initiatives for a healthy environment to schools in the North Shore and Waitakere cities, and to support teachers to implement the health and physical education curriculum.

Approach

We worked with the National Heart Foundation and the Waitemata and North Shore Regional Sports Trusts to develop the project. It aimed to fight inactivity and obesity among children by providing school-based nutrition and physical activity initiatives. We arranged for 30 schools to participate in the project through staff meetings, teacher professional learning and student activities during an 18 month period.

Results

The project was very successful and it formed the basis for the nationwide initiative, Mission On.
