Challenge

Asia:NZ has sought Educating NZ’s help in its work to promote understanding of Asia in schools.

Approach

• In 2005 we assessed Asia studies in more than 50 New Zealand secondary schools. This included surveying, focus groups and international research.
• In 2006, we wrote Asia:NZ’s submission to the Ministry of Education’s 2006 curriculum review.
• In 2007 we developed Asia:NZ’s strategic plan for their activities in schools. We also provided stories and templates on being an Asia Aware school for a website developed by the Ministry of Education in association with Asia:NZ, Asia Knowledge.

Results

Asia studies have a higher profile within the New Zealand curriculum and the education sector. Our research and recommendations have led to an increase in the quantity and quality of Asia resources in schools.
