Objectives:

What's the Plan Stan? aims to improve understanding of NZ hazards – earthquakes, floods, storms, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and non-natural hazards – and provide students with the skills and knowledge to prepare for disasters.

The key objective of the project was the production and dispersion of an ‘all hazards’ public education resource with school children (8 –12 years) as the target audience, which:

  • is curriculum appropriate
  • is interesting to children
  • inspires ‘practical action that children can take to promote preparedness’.

2008

During 2008, Educating NZ are working with the Ministry to develop a resource that will assist schools to teach What's the Plan Stan in Te Reo Māori.

The key writer on this project is Ian Cormack (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe). He is one of two licenced translators who provide the Ministry of Education with quality assurance services on educational materials published in Māori. Ian is currently developing a Māori language style guide for the Ministry of Education’s Māori language team.

2007

The Ministry review aspects of What’s the Plan Stan? each year to ensure the resource is always kept up-to-date. This year they tasked Educating NZ to upgrade the CD-ROM, which included adding photos and video footage of recent disasters, updating regional maps with recent disaster information, adding new website links and games, and the addition of downloadable quizzes in the teachers’ section. ENZ also produced a storybook and an audio CD of the stories from the CD-ROM.

What’s the Plan Stan? consists of:

  • a guide for teachers, including unit plans and activities
  • a CD–ROM for teachers and students, including stories, interactive games, research material, tips for teachers and resources that can be cut and pasted into unit plans
  • a poster promoting What’s the Plan Stan?
  • a storybook
  • an audio CD of the stories
  • a website: www.whatstheplanstan.co.nz

2007 (May)

Regional half-day workshops were developed and hosted by Educating NZ to introduce the updated resource to principals and teachers.

2006

Educating NZ worked with the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management to produce What's the Plan Stan? – an educational resource for teachers and students (printed guide, accompanying CD-ROM and website) – as part of their 'Civil Defence Emergency Management in Schools' project. The resource was sent to every primary and intermediate school in New Zealand.

The resource rollout was supported by nationwide teacher workshops that unpacked the resource and showed schools how to use the material.

2005

An extensive stakeholder consultation process was undertaken. Teacher focus groups and student interviews were held to test and refine the designs, illustrations and concept of What’s the Plan Stan? Several meetings were held with CDEM staff for their input.
