Objectives:

The Department of Conservation contracted Educating NZ to review their online education-related resources for students and teachers and recommend ways to improve and augment them, with the aim of invigorating DOC education objectives in schools.

Project update:

Educating NZ is working with DoC's education team to redevelop strategy to engage schools and young people in light of the new curriculum. By connecting schools with the opportunities provided in national parks and other national heritage sites, DoC aims to resource teachers better and plan high interest material for students.

Client background:

The Department of Conservation is a government organisation responsible for conserving the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand for all present and future New Zealanders.

The DOC website has resources and activities to support teaching and learning programmes with a conservation education focus. Resources are organised by region to help teachers plan field trips to local DOC sites.

Educating NZ recommended a strategy that involved targeting primary and secondary, up to Year 10, and included changes that reflect the new national curriculum.

Five educators participated in a one-day review of the website. The focus group included two secondary teachers (one biology and one geography specialist) and three primary teachers (junior to years 7/8). The focus group objectives were to analyse and gain feedback on the current website content with regard to curriculum coverage, quality and usability, consistency with the NZ draft curriculum, linkages with NZQA framework, and bicultural content
