Objectives:
Educating NZ is working with the Retirement Commission on a pilot project to trial a Personal Financial Education Framework that
all schools could use in their teaching and learning programmes. This initiative is being developed to enable individual students to
acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage their personal finances.
The overall project aim is to:
- provide recommendations on how the framework can be improved
- provide recommendations on the materials, strategies and approaches needed for schools to implement the framework effectively within their teaching and learning programmes.

Educating NZ is working with 10 primary and secondary schools from Auckland, Wellington and Nelson. Each will undertake an action research project based on the Draft Personal Financial Education Framework to develop and trial strategies within their schools.

Client background:
The Retirement Commission aims to help New Zealanders prepare financially for the retirement lifestyle they desire, through education, information and promotion. The focus of its public education programme has shifted from financial planning for retirement to financial skills for life.
The Commission has a strong focus on youth education and is working with the Ministry of Education and other educational organisations with interest in curriculum issues to imbed financial literacy into the New Zealand school curriculum.
