ACC ThinkSafe school pilot national team
Objectives:
Educating NZ worked with ACC on a ThinkSafe and Educate action research project. The project has been structured around the following aims:
- Gather information and trial material for a case study that will contribute to ACC’s ongoing commitment to support schools in teaching safety and injury prevention.
- Assist schools to increase and improve injury prevention education.
- Create a 'safety culture' in schools and communities.

Project update:
2007
An action research pilot project was undertaken to determine if schools are an effective channel for injury prevention education. It involved 30 primary schools in the Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki and Wellington regions during terms one and two of 2007.
A total of 32 schools were invited to participate, which represented the spectrum of schools throughout NZ: a range of decile, small and large schools, urban and provincial etc. Four facilitators – two current principals and two current primary teachers – played a key role in supporting schools in their action research.
From the project, case studies were developed by participating schools on injury prevention for school students. ACC is presently considering the best way to disseminate these for other schools’ use.

Educating NZ developed the content for a ‘child safety organisations’ area on the ACC website, where schools and other interested parties could go to connect with information and support. The directory provides links to organisations who have shared objectives in improving and maintaining child safety and well-being:

2005 (Sep-Oct)
A series of one-day workshops were developed and delivered across NZ (19 from Kaitaia to Invercargill, with 488 teachers in attendance), using the Beacon principal model. The workshops were designed to help teachers with their use of the ThinkSafe injury prevention resource, and provide ideas and encouragement on how to implement the teaching of injury prevention in schools.
2004
Coordinated delivery and ‘unpacking’ of 1800 copies of the ThinkSafe resource (years 1–8). School workshops and training sessions were held in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools throughout the six main NZ centres.
2003
Provided ideas, material and suggestions for the ThinkSafe resource.
